When I started really listening to albums and shit I think I was listening to some Odd Future, early Tyler and shit. This shit really appealed to me because of the dark topics and shit, real edgy shit with great beats. I liked the skater aesthetic with the vans and Tyler's idgaf kinda attitude.
Then I went on to listen to some PE like Joey Bada$$ and Capital Steez. PE had a real strong third eye shit going on. They were edgy just like OF but in a more "mature" way.
After PE I listened to a lot of Kendrick because he was getting pretty popular with GKMC and TPAB. I started listening to Kendrick cause he had some hits on the radio and I figured out that his shit was being called masterpieces and shit like that. This is around the time I started watching theneedledrop, who would later put me on to some great stuff.
From there I went back a few to MF DOOM and some backpack rap like Hieroglyphics and Del. After listening to Kendrick I really wanted to listen to lyrical shit. I didn't want to listen to that "mainstream" rap (ironic huh). I started listening to MF DOOM and it was exactly what I asked for. MF DOOM was literally the opposite of the mainstream. Then I was put on to some classic Hieroglyphics and Souls of Mischief and it helped that they were from Oakland like me.
Then I went on to some classics like Nas, Jay Z, Tupac, Wu Tang and shit like that. After that I still wanted the lyrical shit like MF DOOM. Everytime I would go into a youtube comment section (yeah i actually did that) people would be talking about classics like illmatic and 36 chambers. From there I would start listening to the classics of the 90s. Shit like illmatic, me against the world, 36 chambers, and the blueprint. Shit made me feel better than everyone else because... reasons idk i was stupid
Then I think I started listening to drill and trap which was cool. Older brothers would always be playing some loud ass music when they pulled up in their car and shit. Thought that was cool af so I started listening to that type of music. Drill shit from Chicago and a bunch of trap from down south and even some local artist who were really with it. Made me feel cool as fuck lmao
I would get tired of that soon and started listening to some Tribe and real jazzy type shit. I don't know how I made this transition. I really liked the instrumentals and Phife always sounded smooth as hell on the beats (RIP).
Went to listen to some hyphy shit, that was corny. From there I started exploring some of the music from my area. A lot of Hyphy and mobb music. Hyphy was corny as hell I admit it but I loved it. Mobb music still cool as shit and a bunch of Detroit beats sound like old school mobb shit.
After that like some mid 2000's trap like TI and shit like that. Hyphy was cool down south so they kinda had a thing back in the mid 2000's that sounded similar to it or took some aspects of it.
I think something happened with my grades and shit and I started listening to some early Kanye. Shit just makes you feel like you can do anything.
I think last year was when I started fucking with that south florida distorted rap shit like Denzel Curry. Imperial was fucking amazing album. Made me wanna jump everywhere when I listened to it. It was hard hitting without being "mumble" rap that I hated.
After this I kinda just stopped having this huge hate towards "mumble" rap. I listened to a bunch of Young Thug, Travis Scott, Gucci, Lil Yacthy, Kodak, 21 savage, basically everything that I hated. I liked it, I used to think you were lame for listening to it. Then I realized people that don't like music because of other people's opinion are lame as hell.
Now I listen to everything.
