I revisted a lot of my favourite albums of the year and some favourites in general this week.
Clams Casino - 32 Levels
I thought this album was a really good debut full length project that showcases his versatility in production, while also giving the signature Clams sound. He incorporated both minimalism and maximalism in the same project, which not a lot of producers have talent for doing. All of the features were pretty good, Lil B definitely being better than I expected. Not "blow me away lyricism" but he played his parts. Sam Herring, Kelela and Kelly Zutrau were quite complimentary to each tone in each song they contributed to, but I though Mikky Ekko on Into The Fire was unflattering, and the instrumental was pretty standard to fit her poppy, "whining" vocals. Vince's verse on All Nite was pretty good, but the way the track starts without giving the instrumental time to build up to the verse made for a very annoying start to the track. I do think the instrumental itself is decent, but doesn't fit in the context of his album, rather it would fit on Vince's Summertime 06.
Best songs personally are Be Somebody, 32 Levels, Blast, and Skull
Skepta - Konnichiwa
This album is not the game changer that was promised, but is a quality release from my favourite Grime artist. It seems to have made Grime a sound that is marketable to American listeners, which is something Grime needs if it wants to break out from regional cult following. The beats have groove and bounce, and his flow complements them really well. The lyrics aren't anything to marvel at but the hype and delivery of the lyrics make the tracks more hard hitting. It is a fun album. The smudge mark of the record is Ladies Hit Squad, a horribly done slow song with exceptionally bad lyrics, like Big Sean level of bad. A$AP Nast's part is horribly sung, and the part where D Double E says mree mree. Just what?
Overall it was a year favourite for me, most likely 6th on my AOTY list. I can't give you the best tracks, I think everything except for Numbers, Text Me Back and Ladies Hit Squad are equally good.
